California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Cornelius Greenway (1896-1968) immigrated to the United States from Holland in 1914. During World War I he served with the U.S. Army in France and received the Purple Heart and the Service Medal. He graduated from Tufts University with a BA in 1925 and an STB in 1928.
